Fishing Report: All Access Open... So get out and FISH!
Springsteel Resorts access is open and the staff has been maintaining the pressure ridge just off shore and they are doing a great job. Fishing has been good on the north end of the lake. Anglers are catching limits and seeing nice walleyes and saugers move to deeper water near the DNR reef, Sandbar and South Tip. The fish are biting on an assortment of jigs but to reel them in it's all about "Action" and a lot of jigging.
The local supply of Shiners is limited but Chubs are working fine. The lake trails are groomed but if you are planning a ride to the NW Angle across the lake check with local snowmobile clubs on the conditions of the cracks along the way. Dan at Flag Island Resort report a lot of nice fish caught this past week. The 5 & 12 mile area has been a little hit and miss but with a little skill limiting out isn't an issue. Hot jigs include whistler jigs and weasels in glow colors, pink/gold and orange/gold.
No matter where you plan to fish it is always a good idea to visit your local bait shop or resort on current ice conditions and the best routs to your fishing hot spot! Looking for a fun read and some local insight into Muskeg Bay and Lake of the Woods fishing? Pick up a copy of the Warroad Pioneer where you'll find a weekly fishing column from "Askhim" covering local resort and fishing guide reports and
tips. "Like" Riverside Bait & Tackle's facebook page, then post your current fishing pics for a chance to WIN the tackle package of the week!~ Morris Point - Lake View Lodge: Fishing has remained excellent with A LOT of limits of sauger and walleyes being brought in. 30 to 34 feet has been the best deep bite! 16-18 feet of water has also been working great in the morning and evenings.
People are able to sort out the small fish and keep the nicer ones, plenty of good eating fish are being caught! Many of the fish are being caught 5 to 10 feet off the bottom. Jigging spoons, rattle jigs and glow jigs have been producing the best and most consistent results. The guys at Sportsman's: Sitting around 29-32 feet of water right now just outside of Pine Island. We have started to see a few suspended walleyes, some 4, 6, and 8 feet off bottom. Most of the suspended walleyes have been of nice 24 inch + in size. If you are looking to try hook on to one of these the vexilar/fish finders are your best bet. The best tackle has been glow in the dark jigs, the charmers and glass jigs tipped with a minnow.
Ice Conditions
We currently have 22-24 inches of ice in the areas we travel and fish just outside of Pine Island right now and making more every minute! It is advised to stay on the marked roads as the ice off the road may not be of the same thickness. Trail Report
We have received about 3-4 more inches of snow the past week days. The lake trail to Sportsman's Oak Island Lodge is groomed and in great shape. So if you are itching to go for a snowmobile ride, follow the black stakes from Four Mile Bay and head on up! It is about 40 miles and takes about an hour by snowmobile. The NW Angle is hopping and the trails are groomed! For a look at this weeks results log onto Flag Island Resorts facebook page to see some great pics.
